The Challenge

Purchasing at DSM is a globally-operating functional group under the leadership of the EVP Operations Nutrition. Its mission is to connect customer needs with supplier solutions. With in-depth knowledge of supply markets and close collaboration with our businesses and suppliers, our Purchasing professionals bring supplier capabilities to DSM in an efficient and transparent way. Sustainable and innovative supplier solutions, strong supplier partnerships and an international supply base are important drivers in the value creation for the growth of DSM.

The spend area Indirect Goods & Services covers the most diverse range of purchasing needs for DSM that are not directly processed in our products (Business services, Global Logistics Services, Technical Goods & Services).

Within the Category Global Logistics & Services we are currently looking for a Category Manager Logsitics, which can be in any virtual location in the USA. . This position reports to the Global Category Director for Global Logistics & Services.    


The Position


The category manager will be responsible for managing the global category airfreight with stakeholders and spend around the globe; for managing together with your colleague the North America logistics needs, and to set-up the logistics for Inbound of raw materials. 

The category manager is a member of a global team of 11 category managers on logistics which works closely together in sharing expertise, develop and deploy strategies and balancing workload. 


  • Be responsible for (sub)category strategy development as to deliver maximum value
  • Define and validate sourcing strategy using internal and external analysis
  • Prepare and lead fact-based negotiation and select suppliers
  • Initiate contract implementation and resolve issues
  • Evaluate and renew contracts by identifying and prioritizing opportunities for reduction of Total Cost of Ownership (TCO)
  • Develop and manage relationship with suppliers and track their performance
  • Implement and execute Key Supplier Management programs (KSM) with critical suppliers.
  • Initiate and conduct supplier reviews.
  • Identify potential contract improvement opportunities & renegotiations.
  • Define and implement (strategic) supplier management process.
  • Manage collaboration, knowledge sharing and proper communication within (sub)category by providing strategy, deep category expertise and ensure the use of standardized processes.
  • Manage relationship with internal customers during projects
  • Collect and manage internal customers feedback on the sourcing process to identify further TCO reduction opportunities
  • Improve and reinforce the DSM Purchasing profile and recognition within the internal customer community
  • Implement sustainability programs by  leveraging  supplier capabilities. Drive innovation through supplier partnerships.  

The Ideal

  • Bachelor’s degree required; degree in supply chain, business administration, commerce, or other relevant discipline preferred
  • Master’s degree preferred
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a procurement, supply chain and/or commercial role required
  • Minimum 3 years of indirect procurement experience required
  • Certified Purchasing Manager certification desirable
  • Experience with >$15M in procurement spend required
  • Supply chain and Logistics experience highly desirable
  • Strong project management experience required
  • Experience working in a multi-national organization preferred
  • Ability to travel up to 30%, primarily domestic with some international travel  
  • Knowledge of the Category in terms of concepts, services and contracts
  • Change management capabilities
