Process Safety Engineer - Belvidere, NJ (On-Site)
HNC M&T Belvidere Site is a multi-plant site in which different processes and technologies are operated; Fermentation, spray-drying, Vitamin C processes, Utilities processes for water and wastewater treatment, and various packaging and blending operations.
The Belvidere site is subject to internal and external regulations from OSHA and NFPA. The site uses manufacturing technology for spray drying towers, powder catch bead-letting, granulations, fermentation, and maintains a reactor for derivatives of Vitamin C which falls under Process Safety Management requirements. Process Safety controls are necessary to ensure safe operation of the equipment in order to protect the people and company assets from process safety incident. This includes infrastructure (hardware), systems (SOPs), and behavior (training and knowledge).
You Will:
- Execute activities to control risks, including risk assessment completion and review, audit management, incident investigation and tracking.
- Serve as process safety professional. In this, works toward obtaining Green Belt and Black Belt status within the DNP Process safety life cycle tract.
- Responsible for cyclical process safety reviews (e.g. HAZOP, Chemical Hazard Assessment, Explosion Risk Assessments, Job Safety Analysis, etc.)
- Develop and deliver some SHE trainings in accordance with state/ federal regulatory standards, DSM cultural atmosphere, DSM Belvidere standards and DSM SHE Requirements.
- Provide initial and effective new employee orientation SHE training.
- Actively supports the greater Belvidere SHE programs by being an active participant in the SHE Department.
- Serve as SHE representative in the risk assessments for the Management of Change Process.
- Review SHE SOP’s as part of regular cyclical review as well as when the topics covered in the SOPs come up in other job tasks.
- Work with area managers do Job Safety Analyses for operations and maintenance tasks which require them and perform cyclical reviews.
- Lead SHE audit process and manage actions and closure.

You Bring:
- Minimum Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering or a SHE discipline is required
- Minimum of 1-3 years production or construction experience with demonstrated involvement in engineering and/or process safety engineering.
- 1-3 years of experience in Operations with experience working with SHE standards and practices.
- Professional level of verbal and written communication, technical writing, interpersonal, participative leadership, time management, analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Working knowledge of universally accepted process safety standards
- Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment while managing multiple tasks
- Must have advanced computing skills in Microsoft programs
- Previous working experience in leading process hazard analysis (PHA) and Safety Integrity Level (SIL) layer of protection studies is preferred
