The Challenge

The Sr Project Engineer, Improve Plant  will be responsible for improving the performance of the plant by developing and executing improvement projects successfully, as well as, leading and mentoring a team of project engineers to develop good engineering competence and standards.   The Mulgrave facility is a multi-plant site at which the following processes/technologies are implemented in the production of fish oil: winterization, steam deodorization, bleaching, drumming, concentration and ethylation. The facility in Mulgrave, NS is the world leader in omega3 manufacturing. It is part of the marine lipids division of DSM Nutritional Products, with sibling sites in Piura, Peru and Arcadia, Wisconsin.  It is a growing facility in which a variety of products for pharma, food, and the dietary supplements industry is produced, starting from crude fish oil as a raw material.


The Position

  • Initialize and manage improvements to product and process on site aimed at cost reduction, improving asset utilization and developing the site in accordance with business needs
  • Identify opportunities for process or operational improvement
  • Per site priorities, develop and execute projects in compliance with SHE, cGMPs and good engineering practices.  This would include budgeting, scheduling and handover to the end user
  • Support other departments, including production, QA and Safety
  • Participate in or lead Process Safety studies and Risk Assessments
  • Lead and mentor project engineers
  • Develop engineering standards in compliance with DSM SHE requirements and local codes
  • Drive project management competence amongst the team
  • Support the Improve Plant Manager with managing CAPEX project program
  • Propose and initiate technical solutions to eliminate actual and potential performance issues and discuss with stakeholders
  • Ensure handover to appropriate work process
  • Manages changes through MOC process
  • Display and promote positive safety behaviors at all times ; Work in a SHE responsible manner and report all incidents


The Ideal

  • Bachelor’s degree in an Engineering discipline
  • Project management skills
  • Must have at least 5 years of engineering experience, including project management and process design
  • Good mechanical skills as applied to equipment and machinery on site
  • Advisory and leadership skills
  • Knowledge of production processes and Lean Six Sigma practices
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a supervisory or leadership capacity
