Automation & Instrumentation Maintenance Technician – Mulgrave N.S.  


The Challenge:

 Work Schedule: 4/10 - 4 days a week; 10 hours a day

The Automation & Instrumentation Maintenance Technician will perform duties in the operation and maintenance of instruments in accordance with ISA, CSA, OSHA, ANSI and industry standards.  He/she will drive positive change and work under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor.

The Purpose:


  • Provide technical support for members of Maintenance team
  • Provide technical support for Operations, specifically related to Control Systems, Process, and Instrumentation
  • Inspects, tests, adjusts, and repairs instruments and systems used to indicate, record, and control operations in food oil processing plant: Inspects meters, indicators, and gauges to detect abnormal fluctuations
  • Tests accuracy of flowmeters, pressure gauges, temperature indicators, controllers and other recording, indicating or controlling instruments to locate defective components in system, using test equipment, such as pressure gauges, mercury manometers, potentiometers, pulse and signal generators, oscilloscopes, transistor curve tracers, and ammeters, voltmeters, and wattmeters.
  • Removes defective instruments from system, decontaminates, disassembles, and cleans instruments, and replaces defective parts, using handtools
  • Reassembles instruments and replaces instruments in system, using handtools
  • Assist with the creation and revision of programs for PLC’s
  • Calibrates readings on instruments according to standards and adjusts phasing and aligns stages to ensure accuracy of recording and indicating function
  • Records calibrations made, parts and components used, and inventory of parts on hand
  • Prepares schematic drawings, sketches, and reports to reflect changes or alterations made in instruments, circuits, and systemsProjects and special assignments will be determined and assigned as required



The Ideal:

  •     Completion of college/CEGEP/ Vocational Technical training in PLC and Instrumentation
  •     Red Seal Certification preferred or working towards
  •      Minimum four years of experience in an Industrial/Commercial Instrumentation environment
  •      Hands-on experience with calibrations and maintenance of instruments and PLC
  •      Experience working in a sanitary food processing environment (desirable)

Physical Effort

  • Climbing of ladders and stairs
  • Occasional climbing on top of equipment
  • Use of hand tools is occasionally required
  • Lifting and moving equipment is occasionally required

Mental Effort

  • Must be able to effectively work on multiple projects
  • Must be able to work under aggressive timelines
  • Must be able to quickly learn about unfamiliar topics

Environment (unavoidable adverse conditions)

  • Occasional work outside is required
  • Frequent work in production areas is required where odors, noise, dangerous chemicals and high temperature and humidity levels may be present.
