DSM Nutritional Products is hiring for a Scientist III - Molecular Biotech in Lexington, MA


The successful applicant will be working on a team to apply a broad range of biotechnology approaches for the genetic engineering of microorganisms (e.g. yeast or bacteria) used for the biosynthesis of nutritional products.  Although the primary tasks will be focused on strain engineering, a candidate will also interact heavily with team members in other functional disciplines.  The candidate should be independent with respect to standard practices in molecular biotechnology, have a solid theoretical understanding of the field, and willing to contribute to continuous improvement of the team by exploring alternate approaches.

The Position

  • As part of a high performance team, conducts specific research components of a larger project directed by a senior professional.  Working within a defined scientific area of expertise, will produce and integrate scientific results as part of a project plan.
  • Performs varied assignments requiring application of standard practices in molecular biotechnology.
  • Seeks out and integrates new approaches when standard practices are ineffective or sub-optimal.
  • Leads, executes and assists in design of experiments and adheres to DSM SHE (Safety, Health and Environment) requirements and other standards relevant for the work.
  • Contributes to appropriate reporting of results and to proposals for conclusions and follow-up activities.
  • Interacts with members of other functional disciplines, including (but not limited to) bioinformatics, bioprocess development and analytical chemistry.


The Ideal

  • Education and work experience :  PhD in relevant field with 0-2 years experience or MS in relevant field with 8+ years experience.
  • Has demonstrated mastery of both classical and advanced techniques required for metabolic strain engineering (for example: genetics, molecular biology, genome editing, genomics).
  • Expertise in biology and cell physiology and metabolism. 
  • A proven track record for providing scientific solutions to complex technical problems.
  • Able to adapt to changing business and technical environments, meet tight deadlines, be focused on detail and have an emphasis on quality.
  • Experience with yeast is preferred. Experience with multiple or non-standard microbes a plus.
  • Experience working with interdisciplinary teams preferred.
  • Domestic and international travel to support projects.
