The Challenge

Responsible for the successful operation of the QC analytical laboratory process and overall supervision and training of subordinate staff; ensure all safety requirements are followed throughout the department and maintain a cGMP compliant environment, including compliance with current compendia, regulatory, corporate quality systems / principles, customer requirements, and company quality initiatives including the ICH Q7a Guidance for API Manufacturing, ISO 22000, and ISO 9001 Standard.

The Position

  • Ensures compliance to applicable corporate, federal, and international food safety and cGMP standards (including, but not limited to ISO, ICH, FSMA, FDA, USDA and interagency requirements.).
  • Ensures timely analysis and status of raw materials, in-process samples and final products.
  • Administer the Qualified and Validated/Suitable analytical equipment and systems for chemical analysis and data stewardship, i.e. LIMS, Chromatographic Data Acquisition and Control systems, and the automation of the systems, as back up to direct reports.
  • Provides technical support for Process Validation & Stability Management programs.
  • Provides technical support to laboratory personnel for the analysis of
  • intermediates and finished products for required tests by various chemical and instrumental methods, including GC, HPLC, Spectrophotometric, and Titration.
  • Performs calculations, collects and prepares data for evaluation.
  • Validates systems, equipment, and methods utilized in laboratory operations.
  • Reviews laboratory data for accuracy and determines material disposition (as back up).
  • Facilitate development, periodic monitoring, and execution of the Process FMEA / Quality Risk Assessments.
  • HACCP Coordinator and PCQI representative for the site.
  • Resolves process and laboratory deviations / variances as necessary to support Sr. Laboratory Technicians.
  • Develops programs utilized for achieving competence of laboratory technicians and review/verification of skills mastery on a periodic basis.
  • Participates in development of Quality Control budget and ensures laboratory supplies and equipment maintenance and repair does not exceed budget.
  • Maintains SOPs and DFTs to ensure current, accurate and contains SHE principles.
  • Responsible for the safe operation of the quality laboratory.
  • Involvement in setting up & reviewing SHEQ requirements, procedures and instructions by participating in SHEQ culture on site.
  • Supports plant and corporate initiatives as outlined in the manufacturing plan. Follows the manufex work processes.
  • Provide technical support for site projects.
  • Primary technical representative for all Laboratory projects.
  • Performs the quality technical review for MOC Impact Assessments.
  • Coordinates the availability, planning, system integrity, energy efficiency in compliance with SHE requirements.
  • Identifies abnormal trends or occurrences and initiates corrective action.
  • Participates in RCA.
  • Supports Internal Audits.
  • Participates in the VPP self-inspection walkthroughs and coordinates completion of self-inspection action items.
  • Shows leadership by working to SHE standards and encouraging colleagues to work to the same standards 
  • Displays and promotes positive safety behaviors at all times; uses proper personal protective equipment, appropriate safety tools, equipment and procedures to ensure that self and others go home safe each day; that area and equipment operate at the highest safety levels; that all people in the area comply with the safety directives and keep the area neat and clean.
  • Follows all SHE instructions and procedures to include ensuring awareness of and following all DSM Life Saving Rules.  Acts in such a way that safety awareness and accident prevention are considered in performing all tasks.
  • Ensures that all personal safety, quality, and assigned training is up to date and in compliance.
  • Ensures that the competences of the employees are sufficient to let them perform their task in a SHE responsible way.  Ensures that all direct reports’ safety, quality and assigned training is up to date and in compliance.
  • Supports and follows the policy of reporting incidents, near misses and improvement possibilities.
  • Ensures Quality procedures, Management Directives and Quality improvement projects are supported and followed.
  • Reports any quality deviations or non-conformances observed.
  • Supports routine Quality talks/briefings with staff to raise Quality awareness.

The Ideal

The level of education generally necessary to effectively handle the job’s essential functions is a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry, or related science is preferred, or an Associate degree in chemistry or chemical technology with high level experience.

  • Working knowledge of ICH Q7a, ISO 9001, ISO 22000 and GxP
  • Depth of Knowledge in Spectroscopy, Chromatography and Wet Chemistry methods
  • Knowledge of Method Verification & Validation
  • Broad knowledge of Manufacturing Process
  • Broad understanding of safety and hygiene rules
  • DSM Safety Standards.
  • IT skills involving Windows, Network, and equipment maintenance.
