DSM is looking for an Associate Scientist I, Analytical in our Biomedical HQ in Exton, PA. 

The Analytical Research team supports R&D team operations as well as continuation engineering projects, QA sampling and analysis and customer specific projects. This team utilizes the DSM competences in integrating analytical and biological characterization with polymer science and engineering, biotechnology and pharmacology while supporting R&D, Operations, QA and customer initiatives.

In the role of Associate Scientist, Analytical you will:

  • Assist with product and process development activities for development projects through analytical and bio-analytical characterization. 
  • Assist in establishing standard operating procedures for chemical processes of new products.
  • Develop a fundamental understanding of applicable chemical and application tests by executing DOE’s and test protocols required to evaluate parameters of new and existing chemical processes.
  • Assist in the generation of process routers, drawings and other written documentation in accordance with GMP requirements to support commercial manufacturing.
  • Conduct experiments related to evaluating new technologies, polymers, biomaterials for medical implants or devices.
  • Tabulate data and summarize results based on completed experiments and/or tests.
  • Interface with internal supporting groups and labs active in product development, product testing and process development as needed.
  • Effectively communicate test results with scientists, project directors and/or R&D management.
  • Assist in documentation leading to invention disclosures.
  • Maintain a detailed laboratory notebook and accord records according to GLP guidelines.
  • Actively participate in establishing safety-oriented protocols.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Participates in transfer of test methods from other facilities and ensure validation and execution are done with quality and on time.
  • Writes reports and technical documentation based on analysis of data.
  • Maintains a detailed laboratory notebook and accord records according to GLP guidelines.
  • Performs analytical research and method development with chromatography, thermal analysis and rheology.
  • Develops, validates and transfers methods from R & D to Quality for product release testing.


The Ideal candidate will possess:

  • BS/BA in Science, Technology or equivalent (chemistry, polymer chemistry, material science, chemical engineering, surface-physics, mechanical engineering, biomaterials)
  • Know-how of Operating in Context of the Medical (Device) Industry in Regards to Quality System Requirements (e.g., ISO13485, cGMP) and Regulatory Issues is Preferred
  • Starting MS or BS/BA with several (3+) years of experience.
  • Beginner to intermediate experience operating analytical instrumentation (HPLC, GPC, GC, FTIR, DSC, TGA, DMA, MFI, Parallel Plate Rheology, assays, bioanalytical testing, cell culture, cytotoxicity testing).
  • Experience preparing HPLC/GPC mobile phases, samples and standards.
