The challenge

As the Manager Improve Plant you are going to lead a team of 8 specialists; consisting of Product Development Engineers, Improve Engineers, Program Managers and Site Facilitator Continuous Improvement. With this team you are responsible to drive improvements to process standards, plant stability and SHE. This means that there are constantly improve projects running and attached to it, a large Capex budget year-on-year.


The team consists of (senior) professionals who work independent and are self-propelling. Developing them and attracting new talents are part of your role. The other big part of your role is to be a sparring partner for your colleagues in SHE and production to drive improvement projects that are fitting the shared goals of the management team. In this role you will report to the site manager and you will be part of the site management team.


DSM Engineering plastics site in Emmen consists of 3 different plants, with all of them having their own specific challenges. The processes are characterized by frequently manual handling, a large diversity in equipment and operating instructions in combination with a very high number of product types with their specific recipes.
This Multi Business environment is to be ‘serviced’ by one department, this requires that you and your team make careful consideration of priorities and benefits to allocate resources to the ‘right’ projects and proposals.


The key responsibilities

For you and your team to manage:

  • Prepare, execute and monitor Project Portfolio Management; CAPEX and non-CAPEX.
  • Ensure that project objectives and milestones are met within the approved budget, timing and in accordance with all relevant compliance rules and agreed quality standards.
  • Lead the Improve department to provide technological solutions to the Operation Plants and contribute to, and facilitate effective optimization and improvement of the plants
  • Improve performance, cost efficiency and reliability of technical installations and production processes
  • Support Operation departments in plant operating problems.
  • Facilitate and support the Technical Safety Life Cycle activities: HAZOP, ATEX, MSA, validation and verification
  • Review/approve all process and technical modifications in a SHE and Q compliant way
  • To ensure the integrity of process and equipment in terms of SHE and Q
  • To ensure the plant performance reliability by defining the operating windows for process and equipment parameters
  • Provide broad and in-depth technological/technical expertise

The ideal

You will match with this role, if you have:

  • 8-10 years of experience in operations, engineering or project engineering; within the process industry and good knowledge of chemical processes.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in leading a team.
  • (Senior) experience in project management in an operational environment.
  • Master level education or work experience, preferably in a related field.
  • A lean six sigma green belt / black belt qualification is a plus.
  • Very good command of English, and good command of the Dutch language or willing to learn.

The salary package for this position is a base salary between 80.000 – 105.000 euro per year depending on your background and experience, a 12% bonus, 25 holiday days and 6,11% of my choice budget to use for different benefits including buying extra holiday days.

The Site DSM Engineering Plastics Emmen produces the polymer Polyamide 6 (Nylon) based on caprolactam in the PA6 plant. This polymer is used in textile and carpet yarns and for domestic, industrial and electrical applications. Additionally, in the Compound plant, polymers for specific applications are made based on five basic polymers. These polymers are made by adding coloring agents, reinforcing agents, mold release agents, flame retardants or other additives, and are supplied under the name Akulon, Arnite and Arnitel. DAP manufactures raw materials for both plants. The end products are then packaged and prepared for shipment. There are high demands in the field of SHE: DSM achieves an accident-free workplace.
