Senior Scientist, Strain Improvement/Columbia, MD/On-Site

 

Our Columbia Biotech center is looking for a scientist to lead, design and execute the strain improvement strategies for our global innovation projects. This person will apply their subject matter expertise in strain improvement, chemical genetics, chemical mutagenesis and adaptive evolution to improve key characteristics of yeast, fungi, bacteria, algae or other microorganisms used for the biosynthesis of nutritional products.

 

The applicant will be part of a team tasked with the development and improvement of commercial microbial products within a collaborative, global, fast-paced environment. (S)he will act as a liaison between various departments (fermentation, down stream processing and analytical chemistry groups) to develop screening methods and ultimately organisms that deliver target performance at large scale fermentation production. The position will require hands-on work in our laboratories as well as project leadership and team mentorship responsibilities, with the potential to grow into larger leadership opportunities in the future.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as an independent thought leader, direct technical workstreams and manage others within the context of a global innovation team
  • Apply their subject matter expertise in strain improvement, chemical genetics, chemical mutagenesis and adaptive evolution to improve key characteristics of yeast, fungi, bacteria, algae or other microorganisms used for the biosynthesis of nutritional products.
  • Be part of a team tasked with the development and improvement of commercial microbial products within a collaborative, global, fast-paced environment
  • Develop, implement and lead strain improvement strategies for innovative nutritional products
  • Contribute from both the lab and leadership to advance the strain improvement/HTS competencies to accelerate innovation projects
  • Act as the lead strain improvement representative on cross-functional and global project teams for the development of new microbial biotechnology processes; Analyze, interpret, and present study results and conclusions in cross-functional and project meetings
  • Collaborate closely with project teams to optimize the screening strategy integrating high throughput assays and lower throughput orthogonal assays for efficient profiling
  • Develop procedures for miniaturized and high throughput assays for chemical mutagenesis, chemical genetics and adaptive evolution
  • Develop and lead site wide screening infrastructure including small molecule screening library collections, lab instrumentation and robotic platforms, and development of novel data handling and analysis workflows
  • Work with cross-functional teams within a global organization to shape competency development programs and drive collaborative research efforts globally

You Bring:

  • PhD degree with minimal 5 years of industrial experience in microbiology, microbial cell physiology, biochemistry, microbial culturing, fermentation or related field
  • A strong background in biochemistry, microbiology, microbial physiology and cellular metabolism is required
  • Experience with small scale cultivation systems and downscaling/miniaturizing biochemical and cell based assays into HTS amenable formats required
  • Experience with classical strain engineering/screening or evolutionary engineering
  • Practical experience desirable with high-throughput screening methods and metabolic diagnostic techniques such as liquid-handling robotics, microscopy, cell staining, fluorescent labelling, flow cytometry, protein expression/purification; experience with large scale screening/quantitative data; experience with automation scripts, database queries and advanced analysis software programs such as Spotfire, LabVantage or JMP a plus
  • A highly innovative scientist with a drive for creating and developing a positive and engaging team dynamic, translating ideas into practical advances
  • Energetic, highly self-motivated team player, able to work with multi-disciplinary and global teams in a dynamic environment to shape competency development programs and drive collaborative research efforts
  • Excellent leadership skills, ability to motivate and inspire. Provide strong scientific mentorship for junior colleagues
  • Excellent communication skills
